Disable disk defrag

Post by PaulB »

I am trying to disable native Win 7 disk defragging. I can find where to turn off scheduled defragging but not background defragging, if that is a feature of win 7. Can someone point me in the right direction. I believe it is currently turned off but I would like to confirm this.
Regards,
Paul

Click the Start button.
Type services.msc in the search box.
Click on the single entry in the search results.
Find Disk Defragmenter in the list of services.
Right-click it and select Properties from the context menu.
If the Startup dropdown contains Disabled, you're already OK.
If not, select Disabled, then click Apply.
You can now close the Properties dialog and the Services window.
Best wishes,
Hans

Thanks, Hans. The Startup was set to manual and was not running. I changed it as you suggested.

Defragging should be turned off for SSD devices. I'm looking to install one of these. I was also reminded that ShadowProtect requires that disks that are incrementally backed up have defragging turned off.

Just wanted to check.

Paul

See Disk Defragmentation – Background and Engineering the Windows 7 Improvements. Windows 7 defragmentation is disabled for a disk when an SSD is detected.
