A Notepad tip.

Post by Roderunner »

Hi Folks,
have you ever wondered when you last opened a text file? All you need to do is press F5 and it will input date and time for you. I position the cursor at the top before pressing F5.

And if you add
.LOG
to the top of the file, it'll do it automatically for you!

Hi Leif, I think my method is easier. as it can be placed at the top giving easier access in a large file. Also you don't have to add .LOG to every txt file.

Not sure I fully understand your proposal, so a question. Is "opened" a synonym for "viewed?"

Let's say I have a text file I just want to open and read, WITHOUT making any edits to the file. I just need to re-read its contents and then close the file.

If I take your step and add the date and time, I would then have to SAVE the file again, would I not?

That being the case, Windows Explorer already tells me the dates created and last modified. But it does not tell me the last time I viewed the file but did not make any changes.

Hi Al, I use it to keep a record of when I last did certain tasks.
