Finding files in folder using Windows Explorer

Post by ErikJan »

As quick way I always use to look at all files in and below a certain folder is to select that folder in Windows Explorer and then type *.* in the Search box in the upper left (I know... it doesn't show hidden and systems files unless you make them visible).
This is also a nice option to select files and copy them without being limited by the individual folders in which they reside.

This has always worked fine for me to date. However now I have a (network) folder where I see 55000 files if I use properties, where I have access to all files, where a tool like SpaceSniffer shows me everything.
If I do my 'trick' in Windows Explorer however, I'm getting only a few hundred files and folders.
I have Read access to this folder structure. If someone with write access tries the same, that person DOES get all 55000 files displayed in Windows Explorer.

Anyone who can explain to me what I'm missing (i.e. why I'd require write access in Windows Explorer to traverse and display files?)

Could it have to do with which folders are indexed by Windows Search?
Best wishes,
Hans

NO, it worked with the owner and it didn't work here. Even left it overnight. Moreover, this is a network location.

I hope that someone who knows more about Windows can help you.

Thanks. I'm not sure but as I seem to have access if I 'click around' and as some tools can map out the entire folder tree (also e.g. Dir /s in CMD works), I don't think this is related to security (unless Windows Explorer asks for more than it needs).
I tried to see if there was anything special with the files that did show up but I can't seem to find anything logical...

No, I do not approach the files / folders via a library link
