Windows Snipping Tool

Using Win7, there is a Snipping Tool that I use for a lot of screenshots. I realize that there are lots of other tools for this, and I've used some of them; but using the native tool seems to be less troublesome, somehow.

I've run into a situation where I need to snip part of a screen AND a drop down menu. When I invoke the menu then open the snipping tool, the drop down menu disappears. I read that this can be overcome using the Escape key, but I can't seem to find the correct sequence that will allow the menu to appear and the snipping tool to be active. I would expect to have to use PrintScreen (as I've read), but I can't get past the first hurdle of selecting the display bits to be captured.

I find that by pressing 'esc' and then clicking the menu drop down, and finally pressing and holding 'Ctrl' and then 'PrtScn' it works.

Open the snipping tool. If it casts a semi-transparent overlay over the desktop, press Escape.
Click the dropdown menu.
Press Ctrl+PrintScreen.
You can now drag a rectangle that covers the menu plus whatever else you want to capture.

I'm still having problems, but it might be just me having a senior moment.

I have the application open (SketchUp). I have the screen object I want to save where I want it on the screen. When I open the snipping tool, it displays its screen icon but nothing is semi-transparent. To get that semi-transparency, I have to click "New" in the snipping tool. The screen then becomes semi-transparent (the snipping tool does not). Pressing "escape" at this point removes the transparency effect leaving the snipping tool, but it also makes the menu unavailable (greyed out); so I cannot get the drop down menu.

OK, so just open or activate the Snipping Tool.
Then activate the menu that you want to take a screenshot of.
Press Ctrl+PrintScreen.

Although I use PicPick, I closed it in order to try Snipping Tool
I initially did not get the cross-hair to determine the snip area after following these instructions.
So I closed the snipping tool, reopened it, and then it worked just as specified.

Bob...try closing it and reopening it...and then follow the instructions.

Immediately upon opening the snipping tool, the application menu greys out. I'm probably trying to use the wrong tool and/or there is some incompatibility between SketchUp and the snipping tool. I'm going to head over to the SU forum and see what I kind find. I have Pic-Pic and ScreenPresso and other tools, I just thought there might be something I need to learn about the native snipping tool in Windows.

The tool should work irrespective of the underlying app. However, if all else fails, you could just press [Print Screen] once you have the appropriate setup on the screen, then open Paint, or Word, or PowerPoint, etc.. and press paste in that app. It will dump the screen image in the app, and then you can simply crop the image to the appropriate part.

1.) If the menu you wish to copy is from an app open the app.
2.) Launch the Snipping Tool, Press "New".
3.) Press "ESC"
4.) Open the menu you wish to capture.
5.) Press CTRL + PrintScrn

UPDATE:

I was able to capture the image I wanted including the drop down menu. I still don't know what I was doing wrong.

I discovered along the way that the Snipping Tool icon has a Help button (white question mark in a blue circle field) that when clicked leads to answers to all my questions. The instructions were not different than those given by Jay and others, but somehow I was able to follow them correctly and got my screenshot as follows: open Snipping tool; press Escape; click on menu to get drop down options (this took 2 clicks for unknown reasons); Ctrl>PrtScn; lasso the image and release the mouse button.

At that point, the Snipping tool is the active application. The first click is needed to activate the other application, the second does something in that application.

I got annoyed a lot by things like Drop down Windows disappearing when I used Snipping Tool.
I found something similar to what Rudi does a good quick compromise

First I get what I want to capture anywhere on the screen.
Then
I Hit Print ( or Druck ) – That is usually Shift+{either the 4th or 8th Key from Top Right on my Keyboard}
Then I open Paint and paste in ( Ctrl+V ) , which dumps the screen into Paint
Then I open Snipping Tool and use that to take the bit of the Screen Dump I want from the Dumped image in Paint. I find that a bit quicker than cropping in Paint. You can easily select freehand or Window crop, and the pen option is easy to get at as well as the rubber ( erase thing )

Also recently I hit on this

P.S. An important warning:
There is a SnippingTool Plus which is often offered free to download, for example on XP if you do not have Vista or Win 7
Be very Careful: It seems to be full with viruses, or they come down with the download. !! - The first thing my Microsoft Security Essentials did when i installed it was wipe out a SnippingTool Plus which i had downloaded
