The best smiley feature ever to be proposed ....

Post by ChrisGreaves »

(I know, I know, "Not in your lifetime, Chris" ...)
Quick now!
  1. What's the smiley for "fed up"?
  2. What's the smiley for "annoyed"?
  3. What's the smiley for "disgruntled"?
You don't know, do you?
Me neither, which leaves me  because I have to scroll through 4 re-sized windows trying to guess which graphic is closest to what I want.
I would like to see a smiley facility where I could key in a text description of my mood and then select from a list box of probable matches.
Where no match is available, the facility would allow me to scroll through the available smileys, a list of graphic and text, and identify the one which most closely matches my mood.
My (previously) unfound search term would then be added to the synonyms for that graphic.
This heuristic process would quickly amass the set of synonyms we are most likely to use in our regular daily lounging (assuming there is such a thing), and then I could be described as :gruntled: or even "over the moon: instead of wondering whether I was  :clapping:  :fanfare:  :hairout: :innocent:   :thankyou:  :artist: :bananas:  :bravo: :chef: :clever: :coffeetime:  :gent: :groovin:  :music: :sailing: or just plain :yep: !

Er, ... Not in your lifetime, Chris...

You could, of course, create your own smiley application, with keywords and priorities assigned to smileys, and a nice search function...
Best wishes,
Hans

A smiley reference would be great Chris...Then we don't have to memorise or open the huge multipage index of smileys available to us. I think I still have not seen ALLLLL the smileys in that index!!

Rudi

Quite.

The application would be for your own personal use, there'd be no way we could incorporate it into the phpBB software.

For anyone who's interested: here is an Excel workbook with the complete list of smileys (including flags).
Column A contains the smiley.
Column B contains the "code" for posting the smiley.
Column C contains the description.
Column D contains indicates whether the smiley is displayed on the page where you compose a post or PM. For the ones that have FALSE, you have to click View More Smilies.

You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.
Best wishes,
Hans

Thanks Hans.
I see I am fourth out of the starting-blocks.
Nevertheless, I have a 1-hour ride in a car as a passenger at 10am, so I can spend an hour going "Uh huh", "You don't say" and even "I agree" whilst working out the solution in my head ......

Aren't the other passengers likely to wonder why you're just talking to yourself?

I've posted this here somewhere but not worth looking. Just in case it might be of some use to someone...

Way, way back, in the old, old Lounge, I downloaded ALL the smileys we had at that time and kept them around all these years. When the "other" forum was in its infancy, I did a little modification work on the HTML and put the bunch up on my domain in case anyone could use them.

In the w3t lounge, you could click on one and it would be inserted in your post. I of course had to change that code since it only worked in the w3t software. On my page if you click on one, it will simply display it in your browser.

You can either save the smiley to your local drive or copy its link to use as an " img " tag in this software. Here 'tis, for whatever it's worth, if anything:

Well, there's just the driver, and I suppose she is focused on the road ahead, isn't she?

Oops, thanks Don. That one must've been there for a long time. I've caught a few already. I'll fix it today.

It's a lot more fun if you memorize one sentence after about three minutes, let her ramble on for another 30, and then say can you explain that <one sentence> in more detail?
